"You're getting fat"

Last year before I really started to show during my pregnancy, my students (as well as other students) said nothing but, I think, started to wonder why I had started to gain some weight.  Now.....I didn't gain massive amounts of weight (31 lbs total) during my pregnancy but it was becoming quite clear that my belly was expanding.

One day I was walking into the cafeteria with my students and strolled past a table of 4th graders (I was teaching 5th grade at the time).  One of the students, who was known to tell it like it is in a blunt sort of way, looked at me and said, "Mrs. Gleason, why are you getting fat!  You should stay skinny!"  Definately a "caught off guard" moment, I turned to her - my two healthy hashbrowns in hand - and replied, "Because I'm eating this!" and continued heading towards the teacher's lounge.  I didn't want to out myself on the first mention from a student.

Lord knows that the later conversations with the girls in my class are funny enough that I'll save it for another blog post.....

This is what I looked like when I was told I was getting fat - and the reason why we began the weekly belly pics!

  1. Cute story! I love what kids say and ask about pregnancy. I had an autistic student ask me what my baby was eating for lunch when I was about 7 months pregnant with my second. With my first I had a second grader tell me all about a special about giving birth she watched on TV. Her description of the program ended with, "I sure hope you have a better time than the lady on TV because she was really screaming. A LOT!" What do you even say to that? lol

  2. That is great!!! I was working in the corportate world when I had my first baby, and because I had such a hard time and preivous miscarriages, my boss and my other co-workers knew I was pregant, very early on. But, when I was about 12 or 13 weeks into my pregancy, I went in my closet and had nothing to wear. I grabed a maternity jumper that a freind had sworn she wore from 8 weeks on, paired it with a fitted top underneath, checked with husband and went to work. My boss, a very great guy, looked at me and said, is that a maternity dress. I replied, that my husband said I looked good, and he said "did he look at you?" even 12 years later, I still laugh, as I did that day. I also ran to a store and bought some maternity clothes!!! Not as cute as a kid, but an excecutieve isn't that diffrent!!! You were a beautiful pregant lady!!! Take care!
